The Santa Rosa Lacrosse club was formed in 1994 by Jamie Poore (Chico State:1992) with high school players from several Santa Rosa schools. During that first year, there were no games and players practiced informally twice a week. For the 1995 season, SRLC joined the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association and played its first games. The team won it's initial game and finished the season with a 2-7 record.
The 1996 team saw a dramatic turnaround as we went 7-3, winning our first 6 games. The team finished ranked second in goals allowed per game and our goalie was ranked first in save percentage. Unfortunately, the club suffered an upset in the playoffs.
The next couple of years saw some difficult times as recruitment became more difficult. The team played the 1997 season with a small group of mostly new players, essentially starting over, after having to drop varsity due to a lack of players. The season was much like the first with mostly losses. The club didn't field teams for the '98 and '99 seasons.
In January of 2000 a new group of players filled the club with enthusiasm and we again started with a fresh crew. Only four games were played during that year, all losses. However, two games were close, the first was a loss to Mendocino in the final seconds. Two crushing losses to Marin Catholic and So. Marin brought us back to earth. The final game was against Mendo again. We played much better this time but having only 13 players made it difficult to keep up with Mendo's large squad.
During the 2004 season we did not field a team even though we had about 20 players interested. During the 2005 season the team played in a newly reformed league with a few new teams and some longer established teams. We finished with about an even record
After going winless in 2005, the SRLC made significant strides in 2006. The team's record ended up at 6-6 and most of the games were competitive, the last 3 being decided by 1 goal. The top two scorers were sophomores and the top defender was a freshman. The Peters' brother both were named NCJLA all stars.
The 2008 varsity team finished 13-2 and took 3rd place in Nor Cal. The JV team and the youth ranks of the SRLC finally got off the ground each playing their first seasons. JV didn't win a game but the U15 got a few wins under their belts.
The 2009 season was a success overall with varsity finishing 8-7, JV getting their first win and the U15 team finishing second in Nor Cal. The U15 team lost 2-1 to SCDS (Santa Rosa) in the championship game of the B2 division. The 2010 high school teams will have many of the players from our U15 team and the SCDS team, breathing new blood into our high school program. The varsity team was one win away from getting into the playoffs for the second straight year, but we only had 12 players from the final game against Rancho Cotati and came away with a loss.
The 2010 Steelheads varsity team made the playoffs as the 6th seed out of 8 teams in Nor Cal. We beat #3 Chico 7-4 and beat #2 City 12-7. We're proud of our team for making the varsity Nor Cal championship for the first time ever. We faced a tough Casa Grande team and gave them a fight but lost 10-6. Taking a 2nd place finish in Nor Cal gave the varsity Steelheads a spot in the State Championships. We faced the So Cal #1 team, Simi Valley and won 12-4. That meant we faced Casa Grande, for the 4th time, for the state championship. The game ended up 11-4 Casa, but making the State Championship game was a huge accomplishment for a squad of 15 with 6 freshmen.
The JV team had their best season ever finishing with a 2-9 record and many new and freshmen players got the experience they needed to step up to varsity for 2011.
The club fielded for the first time a U11 team and they had a blast. It's always nice to see new players and parents take on the sport. While first-year teams usually don't produce too much in the victory column, the Steelies did a good job and won several games. We witness those boys moving up through the ranks and most of that first U11 team are now playing Varsity.
The 2011 season was a season of growth and success. The varsity team won the club's first ever NCJLA Championship with a 7-6 victory over Casa Grande and then finished second in State for the second year in a row. The youth portion of the club expanded again as we fielded teams from U11 to U15 for the first time.
The club hosted it's first Player Development Camp in July 2011 and had over 40 of it's youth players participate in what was a fun and challenging 5 days. Our players increase both their skill and knowledge of the sport as our coaches all worked together, along with coaches from other schools, to bring new tools to their skill set.
In 2014, the JV team finished off the regular season avenging their only loss with a 7-6 win over Napa. Making it to the playoffs was a great step for our high school program. The Steelheads battled hard but lost in OT to Elk Grove in the 1st round of playoffs.
In 2014, the Santa Rosa Lacrosse Club fielded boys teams at JV, U15(2), U13(2) and U11 and girls teams at U13 and U9 for a total of 8 teams. We continued to grow and have been able to accommodate nearly every player that wanted to play this season. We are rebuilding our high school boys program this season with a JV squad and will return to varsity play in 2015.
In the 2015 season, our Varsity team made playoffs and lost in the first round to a very solid #1 seed Gold Country. JV finished on April 25. The U15 boys finished with a win on May 2 over Napa. The U11 boys team ended their year at the NCJLA jamboree on May 9th at Treasure Island and U13 had their end of year tournament on Sunday, May 17th in Danville. Our U13 girls ended the regular season very strong with two back-to-back wins on May 2.
Coming Soon.
